Somatic Therapy: What It Looks Like In Session

When most people think about therapy, they imagine talking through problems, gaining insight, and learning new ways to think about difficult situations. While those things can be incredibly helpful, they don't always address what is happening underneath the surface.

Many of the clients I work with already understand their anxiety logically. They know they are safe. They know they don't need to be worried. They know their stress response feels bigger than the situation requires.

Yet their body hasn't gotten the message.

Their heart races. Their muscles stay tense. They struggle to relax. They feel constantly on edge, overwhelmed, or exhausted.

This is where understanding the nervous system becomes incredibly important.

Stress Lives in the Body

Our nervous system is designed to help us respond to challenges and keep us safe. The problem is that many people spend so much time under stress that their body begins to operate as if danger is always present.

This can show up as:

  • Constant anxiety or worry
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Irritability
  • Burnout
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Physical tension
  • Feeling restless or unable to slow down
  • Emotional numbness
  • Feeling disconnected from yourself

When this happens, simply telling yourself to calm down rarely works.

The body often needs support before the mind can fully engage.

Somatic Therapy Isn't About Fitness

One misconception I frequently hear is that body-based therapy means exercise or physical training.

It doesn't.

Somatic therapy focuses on helping people better understand how stress and emotions show up in their bodies and learning practical ways to respond differently.

This may include:

  • Breathwork
  • Grounding techniques
  • Progressive muscle relaxation
  • Body awareness exercises
  • Mindful movement
  • Nervous system regulation skills

The goal isn't physical performance. The goal is helping you develop a stronger sense of control over your internal experiences.

Building Awareness Creates Choice

One of the most powerful things that happens in therapy is when clients begin recognizing their body's early warning signs.

They notice when their breathing changes.

They recognize when tension starts building.

They become aware of the difference between feeling challenged and feeling overwhelmed.

That awareness creates options.

Instead of automatically reacting, they can begin responding intentionally.

Over time, this often leads to greater confidence, emotional resilience, and a stronger sense of control.

Therapy Is About Learning to Work With Your Body, Not Against It

Many people spend years trying to fight their anxiety, suppress emotions, or ignore what their body is telling them.

What if the goal wasn't to fight it?

What if the goal was to understand it?

When we learn how our nervous system responds to stress and develop practical tools to regulate those responses, lasting change becomes much more possible.

Healing isn't just about changing your thoughts.

It's also about learning how to support the body that's carrying those thoughts every day.
